Eddie Howe has been handed a reprieve at Newcastle United, but if the Magpies fail to bounce back into Europe next season, there’s no question that PIF will be forced into making a change.
What’s the strategy? Well, at least there actually is one this summer, but whether Howe manages to land his preferred targets is another question – especially in attack.
The £69m sale of Anthony Gordon to Barcelona has handed Newcastle some much needed money after slumping to a 13th-place Premier League finish this year. There will be no European football for the Toon next season.

Gordon, 25, is technically a winger, but he spent a lot of time up top for Howe’s side, and given that Alexander Isak left ten months before, there’s a case to be made that signing a striker should be the first port of call this summer.
Victor Munoz of Osasuna is under consideration at Newcastle this summer, deemed the perfect Gordon replacement. In fact, Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that the Magpies are pushing ahead, having already lodged an opening offer.

Signing a Gordon replacement like Munoz is important, to be sure, but so is finding a focal frontman to restore the balance of Howe’s frontline.
Newcastle’s new strikers, Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa, have both suffered this season, Woltemade petering out after a promising start and Wissa never really getting off the ground.
Well, according to TEAMtalk, Newcastle are currently engaged in talks for Real Madrid star Gonzalo Garcia, who is searching for more game time ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
Newcastle have already held talks with Los Blancos officials over a possible move for the 22-year-old, who is coveted by any number of outfits from the Premier League and abroad, but who could be tempted by moving to St. James’ Park and establishing himself as the club’s starring number nine.
In January, Aston Villa were rumoured to have lodged a £26m offer, but Real could push for a higher sum, with so much interest about.
Like so many talented up-and-comers before him, Garcia has struggled to nail down a starting berth at the front of the Santiago Bernabeu ship. He’s only up against Kylian Mbappe, after all.
But the quality is undeniable, having bagged 13 goals across only 51 senior appearances. Last year, during a breakout spell at the Club World Cup, he was hailed by journalist Zach Lowy for his “world-class” potential.
Though the likes of Dusan Vlahovic have been earmarked by Newcastle transfer chiefs, moving for an emergent superstar such as Garcia could be the track Newcastle need to head down.
Vlahovic will be a free agent when his contract in Turin expires at the end of June. Signing him on a Bosman represents shrewd business, but would he be a better option than Garcia?
The Serbian has struggled with injuries during his time with the Old Lady, only starting 11 times in Serie A. Sure, he scored seven goals, but whether he would survive the added pressure and tightened intensity of the Premier League is another matter entirely.
Garcia’s opportunities with Real Madrid have been few and far between, but he is raring for a prominent role at a team such as Newcastle, who would sign a highly clinical striker.
His goal conversion rate this year stood at 29%. For reference, Isak’s was 23% during his final league campaign on Tyneside. That should make a decisive comment on Garcia’s potential, and how the Spain international has far more to offer Howe’s project than Vlahovic.
It’s refreshing to see Newcastle place emphasis on a new, faster strategy this summer. Whether this pays dividends for Howe and co remains to be seen, but if the rumours are true, and Garcia is being targeted, we might just see a return to the slick and stylish football that defined this project as it rose to the fore.
