[WATCH] Underrated WWE star receives a standing ovation; Trick Williams forced to turn babyface for one moment

Trick Williams successfully defended the United States Championship in a live event in Madrid in an epic fatal-4-way match. Once it was done, he momentarily turned babyface by endorsing an underrated star, who received a standing ovation.

WWE has been on a tour of Europe, and although they were just in Barcelona not too long ago, they went back to Spain, this time to the capital of Madrid. Trick Williams would defend the United States Championship against Carmelo Hayes, Sami Zayn, and Axiom. The latter is a hometown hero and is Spain’s only WWE superstar.

Axiom, who is considered an underrated name by many in WWE, would ultimately fall short to Trick Williams. However, he received a standing ovation from his hometown crowd in a very touching moment after the match, and you can see in the video above that Williams had to endorse Axiom, momentarily turning babyface.

Of course, to many WWE fans, Trick Williams is the biggest babyface on SmackDown. Like Oba Femi on RAW, Williams has quickly risen to become one of the most popular stars on the entire roster. The reactions he gets are like none other, and he has “star” written all over him.

It seems like every week, the reaction to him grows stronger. Right now, WWE has seemingly acknowledged Williams’ popularity by keeping him in a “tweener” role. For those who don’t know, a “tweener” is a short form for “in-betweener”, which implies that a superstar is not a babyface, nor are they a heel – their character lies in those deep shades of grey.

WWE fans often like these kinds of characters, but one has to wonder how long the company can go without turning Williams heel. He was embroiled in a bitter feud against Sami Zayn heading into WrestleMania 42, with fans preferring Williams and rejecting Sami Zayn after he dethroned the beloved Carmelo Hayes.

Now, Sami Zayn is fully out of the United States Championship picture and Williams is moving forward with his rivalry against long-time frenemy, Carmelo Hayes.
