Starfleet Academy’ Boldly Goes to Digital



It’s not quite the same as a physical release you can hold in your hand, but the first season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is now available to purchase on digital platforms—so you can catch up on the series even if you don’t have a Paramount+ subscription. It arrives with the added enticement of bonus features.

Starfleet Academywhich will conclude after its second and final season as part of a franchise-wide pivot away from the small screen, ran into some ridiculous culture-war controversy in its first season, despite being a solid, entertaining outing overall. Suffice to say, haters can just steer clear of the digital release, which includes bonus features such as the nearly hour-long featurette First Yeara shorter featurette on the show’s props, a gag reel, two deleted scenes, and one extended scene.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy “introduces viewers to a young group of cadets who come together to pursue a common dream of hope and optimism,” reads the official synopsis. “Under the watchful and demanding eyes of their instructors, they discover what it takes to become Starfleet officers as they navigate blossoming friendships, explosive rivalries, first loves, and a new enemy that threatens both the Academy and the Federation itself.”

The cast is led by Holly Hunter as the chancellor of Starfleet Academy. The young Starfleet cadets are played by Sandro Rosta, Karim Diané, Kerrice Brooks, George Hawkins, and Bella Shepard. Other cast members include Zoë Steiner, Tig Notaro, Robert Picardo, and guest stars Oded Fehr, Mary Wiseman, Gina Yashere, and Paul Giamatti.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy returns for its final season sometime next year on Paramount+.
