The Volgograd Arena stages an international friendly between Russia and Burkina Faso on Friday. The hosts’ suspension from competitive action has now stretched beyond four years as they continue to keep match sharpness through a series of friendlies, while the visitors must also settle for exhibition fixtures after missing out on qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
After putting together a brilliant 18-game unbeaten streak, a run that included Russia recording their biggest-ever victory with an 11-0 thrashing of Brunei, results have since tailed off for the Eastern European nation, who have won just one of their last four matches.
Thanks for the submission!
The National Team faced World Cup-bound Egypt at the Misr Stadium in Cairo last week, suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat after managing just one shot on target. They will return to home soil this weekend, aiming to make amends, while also building momentum ahead of their clash with Trinidad and Tobago next Tuesday.
Burkina Faso enjoyed one of their strongest World Cup qualifying campaigns to date last year, picking up 21 points from 10 games and finishing second in Group A. However, due to a CAF ruling that excluded results against sixth-placed teams when ranking the runners-up, Les Étalons missed out on a playoff spot on goal difference.
The visitors faced Guinea-Bissau in a double-header during the last international break, running out 5-0 winners in the first meeting before playing out a 1-1 draw in the second. They will be looking to test their mettle against considerably stronger opposition on Friday.
While one win in five does little to inspire confidence ahead of Friday’s clash, we are backing the National Team to regroup and bounce back from their recent slump, with their superior quality and home advantage likely to prove decisive.
Prediction: Russia 2-0 Burkina Faso
Tip 1 – Result: Russia to win
Tip 2 – Goals – Over/under 2.5 – Under 2.5 goals (Four of the hosts’ last five matches have produced fewer than 2.5 goals)
Tip 3 – Both teams to score: No
