Rangers could re-sign £6m hero

Glasgow Rangers are not wasting any time in their efforts to replace head coach Danny Rohl, who is closing in on a move to Austrian side RB Salzburg.

The Scottish Premiership giants have reportedly agreed a three-year contract with Hearts head coach Derek McInnes, who led his side to second in the league in the 2025/26 campaign.

After signing Lawrence Shankland on a permanent deal to bolster the squad, the Light Blues have gone back to their league rivals to raid them for their manager.

This means that the Light Blues have taken the top goalscorer and the manager from the team that finished one place above them in the table this season, in an attempt to improve their efforts in the title race for next term.

With McInnes set to link-up with Shankland again, the Scottish boss should also be pushing the club to sign a new winger to support the Scotland international in the final third.

Why Rangers need to sign a new winger this summer

The ex-Hearts boss had Alexandros Kyziridis on the wing to provide Shankland with plenty of chances at the top end of the pitch, as he created 12 ‘big chances’ and 7.86 xA in the Premiership in the 2025/26 campaign.

Kyziridis, who also scored four goals in his 38 appearances in the Premiership, provided a consistent creative threat for the Jam Tarts, which meant that the Scottish striker always had quality service to thrive on.

Meanwhile, none of the wingers at Rangers in the 2025/26 campaign created more than seven ‘big chances’ in the Premiership, as the Gers struggled for creativity in the wide areas throughout the season.

Gassama and Moore both created seven ‘big chances’ for the team, with the latter now returning to Tottenham Hotspur after his loan spell, which shows that Rohl did not have anyone on Kyziridis’ level as a creator.

That is why the Gers must dip into the market to add reinforcements in the wide department during the summer transfer window, so that McInnes has the quality that he needs on the wing.

Rangers could sign their own Alexandros Kyziridis

The Scottish giants have recently been linked with an interest in a deal to sign a star who could arrive at Ibrox this summer as the incoming manager’s new version of Kyziridis.

Earlier this month, it was reported that the Gers are discussing the possibility of a move to bring Vaclav Cerny back for a second spell at Ibrox, after his time on loan in the 2024/25 campaign.

The Czechia international joined on loan from Wolfsburg under Philippe Clement in 2024 before signing permanently for Besiktas in a £6m deal last summer, and they are now hoping to bring him back to Glasgow.

In the Premiership and Europa League during his time at Rangers, the left-footed winger created almost 100 chances in 42 starts for the Scottish giants, creating nine ‘big chances’ in total.

He averaged 2.5 key passes per game in the Premiership in the 2024/25 campaign. No Rangers player created more than 2.1 key passes per match in the league this term, and no winger created more than 1.2 per game on average.

Like Kyziridis, Cerny is the type of winger who can provide constant creativity out wide. His teammates know that he is likely to make something happen whenever they pass him the ball on the flank.

Whilst the experienced forward is a left-footed right winger, instead of a right-footed left winger like the Greek star, he could still be McInnes own version of the Hearts man with the quality that he can provide in the final third.

Cerny is also fresh off the back of a season with five goals and eight assists in 25 starts in the Turkish Super Lig for Besiktas, which shows that he has adapted to yet another country and league to provide consistent quality.

Therefore, the former Ibrox loanee could be a dream signing to come in and improve McInnes’ options on the wing to ensure that Shankland has enough support in the final third in the Premiership next term.
