New York mayor Zohran Mamdani extended an invitation to Victor Wembanyama to attend a public hearing next week. Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs is set to open the 2026 NBA Finals against the New York Knicks on Wednesday.
Mamdani asked Wembanyama to appear on his Commission on Government Efficiency Hearing on June 10.
Thanks for the submission!
“I’m pleased to invite (Wembanyama) to our second Commission on Government Efficiency hearing on Wednesday June 10th 5-8pm, where we’ll be asking the public for their thoughts on how government can run better. Would love to have you there for the whole time!” Mamdani tweeted Wednesday.

Many fans on X claimed that Mamdani’s invitation to Wembanyama might just be a playful request. The hearing is scheduled during Game 4 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden. Tipoff of every game is at 8:30 p.m. While Mamdani wrote that the meeting will be between 5 and 8 p.m., the Spurs star would certainly be unavailable.
Despite the invitation being labeled as a joke, the Mamdani’s meeting is real. The New York mayor has three public hearings scheduled next week to address “streamlining government for small business and community organizations.”
Mandani’s invitation for Wembanyama was for the second hearing, which will take place at Fordham University in the Bronx.
New York City officials had dropped the ban on the Knicks’ watch parties outside of Madison Square Garden (MSG).
According to Front Office Sports’ Ava Hult on Wednesday, an MSG spokesperson said that the city had approved their permit for a watch party at Plaza 33, a space directly outside the arena.
“The Mayor is thrilled that the Knicks will be hosting NBA Finals watch parties, including inside and outside Madison Square Garden and another in Central Park, for Game 1,” a spokesperson for New York mayor Zohran Mamdani said.
“Our administration is proud to support these efforts and give New Yorkers opportunities to come together and celebrate this historic Knicks run.”
The approved permit only covers Game 1 and future parties remain undecided. The city banned outside watch parties following Game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals last month when multiple arrests were made outside the arena.
