A huge mix-up in the middle cost Rohit Sharma’s runout. Hours after the incident and the match, cricket experts and fans are trying to decode whose fault it was actually in the run out of the veteran opener.
India won the match with ease against Afghanistan in the first of the three-match ODI series. Captain Shubman Gill batted brilliantly in the successful run chase. In the lead-up to the 2027 ODI World Cup, Indian cricket fans were curious to see how Rohit Sharma performs against Afghanistan, after an underwhelming Indian Premier League season in 2027 with the Mumbai Indians.

Rohit Sharma had to return to the pavilion with 16 runs from 16 balls. The couple of 4s and a six he smashed during the brief knock was the evident of his elegant touch and were hints about a possible long-standing innings. Possibilities faded away suddenly during the sixth over of the second innings, when a throw removed ‘Hitman’ from the crease.
Former India pacer Mohit Sharma observes that it was Rohit’s call first, but Shubman Gill should have taken the final call as the Afghanistan bowler AM Ghazanfar was on their way. As the Afghan spinner was in the way of the running batters, Gill could not move forward, and Rohit, who already covered half of the pitch, did not have enough time to get back into the crease safely.
“If you see the run out, it was Rohit’s call, but you will see that Shubman had also taken the start, and then AM Ghazanfar got in his way, due to which he could not go ahead. After that, Rohit could also not go back because he had already covered more than half the pitch. It was an error that was not in your hands. If he had not come in the way, then Shubman could have completed the run,” Mohit Sharma said on Cricbuzz after the India vs Afghanistan 1st ODI match in Dharamshala.

A run out never makes a batter happy; Rohit Sharma was not an exception. He looked annoyed with the whole episode. After the match, Team India captain Shubman Gill claimed that after watching the replay, Rohit eased his frustration.
“He saw the replay, he said it’s fine. Even in the last match that we played against Afghanistan, T20s, he got run out there as well,” Gill said during the post-match presentation.
Gill was named the best player of the match for his brilliant, unbeaten 84-run knock off 66 balls. His innings was laced with eleven 4s and a couple of 6s. Rahmanullah Gurbaz was another batter who captured the headlines during the match for batting exceptionally well. Gurbaz registered the fastest century scored by an Afghan batter in the ODIs.
“Gurbaz batted brilliantly. The way he got his century was brilliant. But I think the way we pulled back in the middle overs and the death overs was brilliant. Honestly, I think it was a brilliant wicket to bat on. It was, as the match went on, even when we were bowling, there was a little bit of grip for the spinners. When they were bowling, the ball was coming on pretty nicely,” Shubman Gill said, praising the opposing team batter.
