The Vegas Golden Knights were on the verge of squandering a 4-0goal lead in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final, when the Carolina Hurricanes found the net four times in the third period, and took the game to overtime. 20 minutes of overtime was not enough to decide the winner of this rollercoaster Game 3, as the game advanced into a second period of overtime.
Shea Theodore saved the Vegas Golden Knights from the embarassment of squandering a 4-0 lead in the Stanley Cup Final, when his shot hit the backboard, got a weird bounce, hit Brandon Bussi’s foot and went into the net, pouring cold water on the Hurricanes’ heroic comeback into the game, after being down four goals at the end of the second period.
Carolina Hurricanes captain Jordan Staal looked gutted after the loss. The 37-year-old veteran did not mince his words about the disappointment he was feeling after his team clawed all the way back from 4-0 down, just to lose out on an unfortunate goal.
“Definitely a kick in the you know what. Obviously we lost the game in the second and then, proud of the group, obviously, (for) coming back and giving us the chance. It’s a tough one to swallow but, we’re gonna have to regroup and get after them in Game 4,” said Staal.
The Carolina Hurricanes scored 3 goals in 39 seconds in the third period with quickfire goals from Jordan Martinook, Taylor Hall and Jordan Staal. The Hurricanes had a two-minute powerplay in the final 3 minutes of the game, which they capitalized on by scoring the game-tying goal, courtesy of Andrei Svechnikov.
“We already lost the game in the second, but we almost didn’t. It was a heck of an effort from everyone. Contributing and grinding and finding ways and giving us the chance, a shot. Obviously the way it finished sucks. We’ll look at things that we can do better and not give ourselves a 4-0 hole and go from there,” added Staal.
After three games on alternate days, both teams will have an extra day off with Game 4 scheduled for Tuesday 8 p.m. ET.
