‘Fatal Fury’ Steps Into the Ring of Video Game Adaptations

After Mortal Kombat II and the upcoming Street Fighter, what other fighting games can come to the movies? How’s about Fatal Fury?

On Friday, the Hollywood Reporter revealed popular SNK video games were coming to the big screen from indie banner The Arena. Fatal Fury’s movie is currently being written by David S. Goyer (Foundation), which is said to focus on brothers Terry and Andy Bogard during the South Town fighting tournament. But that’s not all: there’s a solo movie for series baddie Geese Howard in the works, and Skybound is working on the animated series The Vow, which will focus on the Bogards during their training years. Instead of giving it to a streamer, Arena’s reportedly aiming to put The Vow on YouTube.

The original Fatal Fury came out in 1991 and spawned 10 sequels before SNK halted the franchise due to its bankruptcy. It was only in 2025 that it came back with City of the Wolves, but before that, several characters crossed over into other fighting games like Tekken, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and Street Fighter 6. Terry was DLC for Smash and Street Fighter, with fellow series mainstay Mai Shiranui joining him for the latter game in 2024. Similar to Mortal Kombat, there’s a rivalry between Street Fighter and Fatal Fury that made Terry and Mai’s arrival in Street Fighter 6 feel exciting.

For the SNK heads not into Fatal Fury, Arena’s also kicking up projects for games like Metal Slug, Samurai Shodown, and Art of Fighting. Many of these games took place in the city of South Town, which Fighting’s webcomic will help flesh out ahead of the Fury projects. Arena thinks it’s got a new cinematic universe in its hands, but that’ll be up for the audience and fans to decide.
