Former Dallas Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant fired at ESPN host Stephen A. Smith after the New York Knicks won the NBA championship on Saturday, defeating the San Antonio Spurs 4-1. The series ended in Game 5 as the Knicks claimed the franchise’s first title since 1973 and dashed Spurs supporters’ hopes of a sweep.
Dez Bryant reacted on X, firing at Smith, who is a prominent Knicks supporter.

Smith was visibly emotional after the final buzzer. On SportsCenter, he reflected on the team’s long run of disappointment after hopes of the victory. He posted a short video from the press room captioned:
“It’s over.”
The Knicks mounted late-series comebacks in four games and led for just 23.6% of the series overall, the lowest share recorded for a champion since the 1971 Finals.
New York’s run was led by guard Jalen Brunson’s consistent scoring and leadership, which helped counter San Antonio rookie Victor Wembanyama’s impact.
“If San Antonio wins it all, the whole league has to start building around one question: how do you stop the alien, that 7-foot-5 alien from France?” Smith said. “But instead, a 6’1 guard, not the most explosive athlete, not someone playing above the rim, just a smart, crafty basketball mind with elite footwork, ended up leading his team to the title.”
The Knicks’ championship also ended a more than five-decade major sports title drought for the New York metro area.

Stephen A. Smith declines to attack Trump after the Knicks Title
Stephen A. Smith declined to use the Knicks’ championship to attack President Donald Trump after New York beat the San Antonio Spurs 94-90 in Game 5. When asked if he had a response to Trump, Smith said:
“The Knicks just won the title. I don’t give a s— about politics or anything like that. I could care less.”
Smith had earlier criticized Trump’s attendance at Madison Square Garden. Trump responded to Smith after Game 3.
“I think he’s a nice guy, but you need a certain aptitude to run for president,” he said. “You need a high IQ. I’m not sure that Stephen has that. I don’t think he does, actually.”
Despite the feud, Stephen A. Smith chose not to retaliate after the win. Jalen Brunson scored 45 points in the clincher, and Smith said the night belonged to the players and fans. For now, politics was “the furthest thing from my mind.”
