Coventry submit opening bid for Carl Rushworth, he’s open to the move

With Coventry City looking to strengthen after achieving promotion to the Premier League, they have now submitted an opening bid for an “absolutely sensational” player, and Frank Lampard is a big fan.

Big summer ahead for Coventry after securing Championship title

The 2025-26 season will always be one to remember for Coventry, having secured promotion to the top flight for the first time in 25 years, but Lampard has suggested there could be some major changes to the squad this summer.

The Coventry boss said: “In terms of the summer, there’s a lot of work to be done. There’s no doubt when you come up as a non-parachute team with players who aren’t as experienced.

“I know the gap well because I’ve played in it (the Premier League) a lot. I’ve managed a team fighting for the Champions League with Chelsea, I’ve managed in a relegation battle at Everton.

“I understand there’s lots of conversations (to be had). The owner has been very keen on us all enjoying and celebrating in these last couple of weeks, and I agree with that, we can live in the moment. But the next job for the football club is ‘ok, what do we need to do?’ because we’ve risen quite quickly in these last 18 months.”

Sunderland serve as an example as to what can happen if a promoted Championship side gets their recruitment right, with the Black Cats qualifying for the Europa League in their first season back in the top flight, after making a plethora of new additions.

However, the Sky Blues could be looking to keep the nucleus of the current squad together, having set out to sign a former loanee.

Coventry submit bid for “absolutely sensational” star

That is according to reporter Ben Jacobs, who recently took to X to state Coventry have now submitted a formal bid for Carl Rushworth, who has attracted interest from several Premier League clubs.

Brighton are yet to respond to the offer, but it has previously been suggested they could be prepared to sanction a transfer for around £15m – £20m.

Interestingly, Rushworth is “open” to a move to the CBS Arena, despite the interest from elsewhere, and he could be a fantastic addition on a permanent basis, having earned major plaudits from writer Andrew James for his displays last season.

Lampard is a keen admirer too, saying: “He’s a top keeper, he trains brilliantly, he’s low maintenance and I think he’s enjoying it here and I enjoyed him today.”

The 24-year-old featured in all 46 of Coventry’s Championship matches last season, during which time he kept 17 clean sheets, and his performances suggest he is now ready to make the step-up to the Premier League.
