A shocking incident involving Bangladesh spinner Nayeem Hasan has left the cricket world stunned after reports claimed that he was assaulted by police officers in Chattogram on Friday (June 12) night. This happend amid Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s hospital discharge.
Nayeem was returning home from Dhaka Airport after his team, Prime Bank Cricket Club’s, Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League match in Savar. Although he did not play in the match, the spinner was travelling back in a CNG auto-rickshaw when the shocking incident unfolded.

As reported by ESPNCricinfo, police officers stopped the vehicle near the Lalkhan Bazar area and behaved aggressively with the Bangladesh cricketer. Nayeem reportedly had no idea why he was being targeted or questioned.
The situation quickly became serious as the officers allegedly grabbed him by the throat and forced him into another auto-rickshaw to take him to a police station.
People present at the spot informed the police officers that Nayeem was a Bangladesh national cricketer, but they ignored it. Amid the inccident, Bangladesh announced squad for T20Is and Test series against Australia.

Nayeem Hasan said after the incident: “I repeatedly told them who I was, but they refused to listen. The police beat me indiscriminately with sticks and plastic pipes. Later, when I identified myself at the police station, the officer-in-charge told me to keep my eyes down while speaking. If they were really police officers, why did they try to put me into a CNG instead of a police vehicle? I want a fair investigation and justice over the entire incident.”
Meanwhile, the Cricketers Welfare Association of Bangladesh has also called for strict action against everyone allegedly involved in the harassment of Nayeem, who has so far played 14 Tests and is set to tour Zimbabwe for the upcoming one-off Test.
However, Chattogram Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Amirul Islam has promised to take strict action against anyone found responsible after the investigation.
Amirul was quoted as saying by The Daily Sun: “It appears initially that the officers involved did not follow proper procedures during the operation. ” We will ensure that he [Nayeem] receives justice, and whoever is found responsible will be brought under punishment.”
On the other hand, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) expressed deep concern over the alleged harassment of Nayeem Hasan in Chattogram and strongly condemned the reported behavior. The board said the matter is extremely serious and urged the authorities to take strict action.
The BCB said in a statement: “The Bangladesh Cricket Board expresses its deep concern regarding the reported incident involving harassment and abuse of Bangladesh national team cricketer Nayeem Hasan by some law enforcement agency members in Chattogram on Friday evening. The board strongly condemns the unacceptable and inappropriate conduct displayed towards the player and views the matter with the utmost seriousness.
Such treatment of a national athlete is deeply regrettable and warrants immediate attention. The BCB expects a thorough and impartial investigation into the incident and urges the relevant authorities to take appropriate action against those found responsible.”
