Real Madrid are the latest club to face mockery from Atletico Madrid after a £129million bid was rejected by their rivals for Julian Alvarez.
Real made a public statement on Tuesday saying a €150m bid for striker Alvarez had been made and turned down, with Barcelona also reportedly seeing a bid recently rebuffed by Atleti.
Just minutes after Real’s public statement regarding their Alvarez interest, Atletico released a series of posts on X mocking their rivals, including suggesting the Pope was an Ateltico fan and suggesting they are “even funnier than Barcelona” with their attempts to land the Argentine.
“1. Your video of the Pope must have cut off right where he said that he is also an Atleti fan.
“2. You seem to have confused politeness with gratitude, but so there is no doubt: We are grateful to you for absolutely nothing.
“3. We are neither reviewing offers for Julián nor even considering them.
“4. How could we not get along well when you are even funnier than @FCBarcelona_es.”
A follow-up post said: “P.S. Taking advantage of the good relationship with your new president, let’s see if you stop “stealing” players from our Academy. Thanks a lot, @realmadrid!”
It comes after Atletico jokingly posted a transfer offer for Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal following reports of their bid for Alvarez last week.
The club claimed they had sent a proposal consisting of four tickets to a Bad Bunny concert, an annual newspaper subscription and a bag of sunflower seeds in exchange for the Spain international.
The post was accompanied by a mock transfer announcement and formed part of a string of satirical messages aimed at Barcelona, creating images of Barca players like Yamal, Pedri and Raphinha all wearing red and white Atleti shirts.
Atletico Madrid’s very public rebuttal of Spain’s two biggest clubs has clearly gone down very well on social media, with Tuesday’s garnering 10s of millions of views already.
Their public criticism of Barcelona got plenty of interest, and they have now shown they are prepared to take on their city neighbours as they look to keep hold of star striker Alvarez.
Alvarez joined Atletico from Manchester City in 2024 for £81m, with the Argentine scoring 49 goals in 106 games since.
