One of which comes at left-back, with Luke Shaw now entering the final year of his contract.

As per reports relayed by BBC, Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall is open to leaving his club and signing for Man United this summer.

Newcastle aren’t going to want to let Hall leave St. James’ Park, having priced him at £70m. However, after missing out on the England squad, he may indeed be tempted to progress his career and move to a stadium such as Old Trafford.

Carrick does have Patrick Dorgu, 21, to call upon, but this would surely be a signing that could elevate the Red Devils backline to a new height.

Why Lewis Hall could mean bad news for Dorgu

Hailed as having “all the attributes to become one of the best left-backs in the world” by Newcastle teammate Kieran Trippier, Hall might feel hard done by for being snubbed by Thomas Tuchel ahead of the World Cup, but he should not let that detract from the fact that he is a superstar in the making.

His all-action style, strong in defence and elegant and impactful when on the attack, means that he could dovetail into Carrick’s Man United set-up – but could that come at Dorgu’s expense?

Against Barcelona in the Champions League this season, the Magpies wideman proved that he can throw down with the sharpest attackers in world football, negating Lamine Yamal’s threat.

Dorgu is a talented player, but his attack-minded approach has led to criticism since he joined United from Lecce in Italy midway through the 2024/25 season.

He also completed only 28% of his dribbles in the Premier League this year, with a hamstring injury also keeping him sidelined for much of Carrick’s interim tenure.

Dorgu is nothing if not versatile, and given that Carrick deployed him in an advanced role in January, leading to goals against Manchester City and Arsenal, it’s perhaps clear that a more robust and balanced defender might be preferred. In that, Hall fits the bill.

Of course, signing Hall wouldn’t automatically mean that Dorgu earns a starting berth in an advanced area. If anything, he could be delegated to a bit-part role, but if that means that Carrick will create a more balanced team, capable of challenging for titles, then fans will get on board.

United have struggled to maintain elite wide defenders for over a decade now, but it does feel like signing Hall would mark a significant step in the right direction.
