The tragic accident reportedly claimed the lives of the aircraft’s pilot, Erick Javier Diago and co-pilot Ruddy Ghazal, prompting an outpouring of support from across the baseball community. The pilots were identified as American nationals.
“An accident occurred on Sunday afternoon at La Romana International Airport involving the crash of a private aircraft, a Gulfstream 200, registration N318JF,” La Romana International Airport said in a statement.
“The plane was crewed by pilot Erick Javier Diago and co-pilot Ruddy Ghazal, both of American nationality and the only occupants of the flight, which was headed to the city of Austin, Texas, in the United States.”
It happened shortly after the Gulfstream G200 departed from La Romana Airport. According to reports, the aircraft experienced technical difficulties and attempted to return to the airport before crashing during the emergency landing effort.
“We extend our sincere condolences and expressions of sympathy to the families and friends of those who died in this tragic incident,” the airport said in a statement.
No passengers were onboard at the time of the accident, and authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash. As of now, no cause for the crash has been made official.
On Friday, Yadier Molina was seen in the stands supporting his son, Yanu, as Lake Travis High School competed in the UIL Texas 6A Division I state championship.
The 10-time All-Star catcher played all his MLB years with the St. Louis Cardinals from 2004-2022. He won two World Series with the team, in 2006 and 2011 and is a nine-time Rawlings Gold Glove winner.
