England Test captain Ben Stokes has been involved in yet another off-field incident following the aftermath of the first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s. The all-rounder was involved in an altercation alongwith pacer Gus Atkinson in a nightclub as they clashed against the Saracens rugby club, resulting in a major physical tussle.
According to a report by ESPN Cricinfo, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) are currently investigating the pair following the glaring off-field incident that took place in the early hours of Monday, June 8. The report further states that the incident clearly is in breach of the team protocols, and might lead to both players missing the upcoming second Test, scheduled to begin on June 17, at the Oval.
“The ECB is currently investigating a breach of team protocols following the conclusion of the first Men’s Test against New Zealand,” the ECB’s statement said.
“Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson were present at a nightclub in the early hours of Monday morning when an incident took place. We are currently seeking further information, and an announcement regarding the squad for the second Test will be made in due course. The Cricket Regulator has been informed and we will provide a further update when possible.”
The incident was reportedly sparked by an apparent disagreement between Gus Atkinson and an academy player from the rugby team, which eventually escalated. The situation got out of hand when a security guard got caught up in the middle of the brawl, and ended up needing stitches.
However, the ECB have strongly maintained that Stokes and Atkinson were not the aggressors during the altercation.
The string of off-field incidents have been a massive red flag in English cricket in the recent past, forcing the management to introduce a curfew to instill discipline and impose a new culture within the squad. In late 2025, there were multiple instances, where England players were in the limelight for all the wrong reasons.
England white-ball captain Harry Brook was fined and reprimanded for his altercation with a bouncer at a nightclub prior to a matchday during the tour of New Zealand. Emerging batter Jacob Bethell, who was also present during the incident, was let off with a warning.
Soon after, numerous England players were spotted under the influence of alcohol during a frenzied mid-tour getaway to Noosa in Queensland amid the Ashes 2025-26 series.
Although ECB director Rob Key had denied the prospect of a drinking problem within the squad, and skipper Ben Stokes had revealed that he would be abstaining from alcohol, the recent incident does not paint both parties in good light.
