As the cricket world holds its breath for the ultimate showdown of IPL 2026 between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Gujarat Titans (GT)erratic weather forecasts over Ahmedabad have triggered intense speculation regarding the tournament’s official playing conditions and contingency operational frameworks.
With both powerhouse franchises dominating in the tournament and making it to the summit clash, a magnificent crowd is expected at the Narendra Modi Stadium. However, with seasonal clouds hovering menacingly over the state of Gujarat, the grand finale faces a potential threat from overhead disruptions. To avoid confusion, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has laid down a comprehensive protocol to ensure a fair and definitive conclusion to the tournament.
The primary objective of the match officials, ground staff, and curators will be to finish a standard or modified game on the officially scheduled day itself. Unlike standard group-stage matches, the grand finale receives substantial structural flexibility regarding operational timings:
Yes, in the event that not even a single-over tiebreaker can be safely executed on Sunday night, the IPL playing conditions mandate the activation of a dedicated Reserve Day on Monday, June 1. The operational handling of the Reserve Day depends entirely on whether the game had already commenced on the original match day:
If at least one ball is bowled on Sunday but play is permanently halted, the match will resume on Monday from the exact position where it was interrupted. The match will not restart from scratch. All statistical records, wickets fallen, and runs scored will carry over directly into Monday afternoon.
If relentless rainfall prevents the toss from taking place or ensures that no play is possible on Sunday, a completely fresh 20-over match will be initiated on Monday. A brand new toss will be conducted, and teams will have the liberty to alter their playing combinations or tactical setups.
The Reserve Day will inherit the exact same operational flexibility as Sunday, including the 120 minutes of extra time allowance, a standard 7:30 PM IST start time (unless an afternoon continuation is mandated for an interrupted game), and the late-night 5-over cutoff.

If an unprecedented weather system establishes a total operational lockout over Ahmedabad through Monday night—making it completely impossible to complete a 5-over match—the tournament rules step away from on-field action and rely strictly on league-stage superiority. According to Section 16.11 of the IPL tournament guidelines: If no play is possible across both scheduled match days, the team that finished higher on the league-stage points table at the conclusion of the regular season will be officially crowned the champions.
Notably, both RCB and GT completed their 14 group-stage matches with identical records, finishing tied on 18 points each. However, RCB maintained a superior Net Run Rate (NRR) throughout the league phase as they secured the coveted number-one spot in the final standings. This means that if a catastrophic dual-day washout happens in Ahmedabad, RCB will be declared the official champions of IPL 2026, earning their second title.
