Marathon Season 2 is live, and the Light/Shadow contract is one of the new objectives that players are working through right now. It is not particularly complicated once the requirements are clear, but there are a couple of moving parts that can slow things down if going in blind.
With that said, here is how you can complete the Light/Shadow contract in Marathon.
Steps to complete the Light/Shadow contract in Marathon
Before anything else, there is one important condition to know upfront: this contract requires playing on the Dire Marsh map at night. Loading into the wrong map or the wrong time of day means the contract will not progress, so that is the first thing to check before dropping in.
The Light/Shadow contract has two objectives:
- Acquire an Anomaly Specimen from a Hazardous Transport Drone
- Deliver the Anomaly Specimen to an Incinerator

How to get the Anomaly Specimen from a Hazardous Transport Drone
Once inside Dire Marsh at night, wait a couple of minutes. A ‘Hazardous Drone Detected’ notification will appear in the middle of the screen, along with a location such as the Greenhouse or another spot on the map. A quest marker will appear alongside it, so finding the drone is straightforward from there.
Head to the marked location and shoot the drone down. When it drops, check the loot carefully. The drone will drop several items, including cargo containers, but what is needed specifically is the container carrying the Anomaly Specimen. If the first drone does not drop it, another one will spawn.
Shoot that one down and check again. Keep repeating this process across subsequent drones until the Anomaly Specimen drops. It will come eventually, it just may take more than one drone.

How to deliver the Anomaly Specimen to the Incinerator
Once the Anomaly Specimen is in the inventoryopen up the map. The destination here is the Incinerator. To locate it, use the tab on the map screen to check the relevant iconor refer to in-game visual markers to identify what the Incinerator looks like on the ground.
Head to the location, and once you’re there:
- Open the Incinerator
- Place the Anomaly Specimen inside it
- Wait a couple of seconds for it to register
That is the Light/Shadow contract completed. The reward for finishing it is 80 WHAT Faction pointswhich feed directly into the faction progression system.
