Steven Spielberg doesn’t always do genre movies, but when he does, they tend to be pretty big deals. So it goes with Disclosure Day, a movie that intrigued everyone with its vague premise and cast, and kept on intriguing with every trailer and commercial. (Some of which might’ve given away too much of the game, unfortunately.)
Now that it’s here, the reception seems to be pretty good, but not without some caveats. For every person who’s come out loving it and considering it another Spielberg winner, others have walked away not as glowing. The mixed and negative opinions seem to respect the ambition, but aren’t in love with the execution. The main issue, across all ends of the spectrum, is that Spielberg’s in “playing the hits” mode here—he helped create those hits, sure, but it sounds like he suffers here in trying to match Close Encounters of the Third Kind and similar movies. Whether that’s a deal breaker or just something he overcomes is up to you.
Since Disclosure Day is out and one of the big movies of the summer, we want to know what you thought of it? Give us your spoiler-filled opinions below, and let us know how it ranks among Spielberg’s work for you, either just his genre movies or his entire career.
