Shubman Gill becomes fastest Indian to score 3,000 runs in ODIs

Shubman Gill, the captain of India’s ODI and Test team, claims another record in his international career. During the India vs Afghanistan match at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamshala on May 13, the top order batter became the fastest to the 3000-run mark in the ODIs, and the second fastest to touch the mark.

Former South Africa batter Hasim Amla claimed 3,000 runs in the format in 57 innings. Gill surpassed the milestone in 62 innings. At this rate, Shubman Gill could break Virat Kohli’s record as well for scoring 4,000 ODI runs in 93 innings.

So far in his ODI career, the opener has emerged as the fastest to score 1,000 and 2,000 runs as well in the format. Now, with the fifty-plus-run knock against Afghanistan, tonight, he becomes the fastest Indian to accumulate 3,000 runs. Gill walked into the middle for the run chase, in the second innings, with 2,953 runs in 61 ODI innings at an average of 55.71.

He needed to score 47 runs to touch the mark, which he did with ease. He reached 47 in just 35 balls, as he hit Mohammad Nabi for a six and a four in three balls. With the four, he completed the record, depicting skill, confidence, and leadership qualities.

Before Gill. It was the former India opener Shikhar Dhawan, who was considered the fastest Indian to complete 3,000 runs in the One Day International format. Dhawan did that with 72 innings on January 20, 2016. It required almost a decade to break the record.

India claims a comfortable win over Afghanistan

With the in-form Shubman Gill from the beginning to the end of the run chase, Team India surpassed the target of 195 without facing any further trouble. They claimed the win by 7 wickets and 13 balls to spare. Because of heavy rain, the 50-over match was cut short to 25 overs each. The damp, overcast conditions might have influenced the match, but did not reduce the intensity of Indian batting.

The way the right-handed batter was hitting the ball all over the park could have easily claimed a hundred. He remained not out for 84 runs in 66 balls, supported by eleven 4s and a couple of maximums.
