Why GTA 6 metrorails should be drivable


GTA 6 metrorails have already caught attention just from what has been visible in the trailersand the recreation of what appears to be a Miami Metrorail system has the transit-minded part of the community genuinely excited. But the conversation has quickly moved past appreciation for the visual detail into something more interesting: what if you could drive them?

The case for making the metrorails fully drivable is stronger than it might initially seem, and it touches on everything GTA has always been built around.

For anyone familiar with Miami, seeing the Metrorail recreated in GTA 6 is a detail that lands differently. The initial assumption from some was that Rockstar might recreate the smaller Metromover system, so seeing the full Metrorail represented is a genuine surprise.

The scale of it in the GTA 6 trailerwith the elevated tracks running alongside buildings and giving the world a sense of real verticality, already makes the city feel larger and more grounded than previous GTA settings. That scale is exactly why drivable trains would work so well here. The infrastructure is clearly there. Using it only as scenery would be leaving a lot on the table.

One of the most practical arguments for drivable metrorails is what they would do for police chases. Being able to hijack and take control of a train during a wanted level creates an entirely different kind of escape scenario. Lock yourself in, keep the train moving, and let the rail system carry the player across county lines while the police scramble to respond to something they cannot easily intercept.

It is a fundamentally different dynamic from a standard car or helicopter chase, and GTA 6’s map seems large enough to make that kind of cross-map train run genuinely exciting.

GTA has had a relationship with unstoppable trains going back years, and it has become one of the franchise’s most enduring gimmicks for good reason. There is something deeply satisfying about a heavyweight train that simply will not stop regardless of what is in its path.

GTA 6 keeping that tradition alive while also making the metrorail drivable would be a natural evolution of that jokeexcept now it is set against a dense, sprawling city where the consequences of an unstoppable train are considerably more cinematic.

Beyond the chaos angle, there is a more grounded version of this that the community has been vocal about. The ability to ride as a passenger and move freely through the coaches while the train is in motion would be a remarkable detail for an open-world game.

The GTA San Andreas comparison comes up here naturally. That game allowed train travel between cities, and the idea of using the rail network as a way to travel between different areas of the map in GTA 6 is one that a lot of players would use simply for the atmosphere of it, even if faster options are available.

One idea that comes with drivable trains is the ability to change rail trackswhich opens up a layer of intentional chaos that fits perfectly within GTA’s design philosophy. Rerouting a train mid-journey, sending it onto a different line, creating collisions or unexpected encounters along the way, that kind of systemic interaction with the world is what separates a game that feels alive from one that just looks it.

The more niche idea of detachable and reconnectable coaches is acknowledged as a less popular request, and its absence would be understandable. But track switching is a different storyand it feels like something that would get used constantly.
