Shreyas Iyer has already been announced as the India National Cricket Team T20I captain for the tour against Ireland and England, and also for the Asian Games 2026. The ODI vice-captain has taken over the captaincy responsibility from his Mumbai Ranji teammate Suryakumar Yadav, who has been removed as captain after winning the T20 World Cup 2026.
Shreyas Iyer is the only captain in the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) history to have led three franchises to an IPL final, losing twice with Delhi Capitals (DC) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) in 2020 and 2025, respectively, and winning with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2024. Since joining PBKS, he has redefined himself as a batter as well.

Following Shreyas Iyer’s appointment as captain of India, PBKS co-owner Ness Wadia has commented for the first time on the feeling of Shreyas becoming the captain. He shared his feelings while providing an exclusive interview to Cricbuzz, where tackled about the 31-year-old batter’s development as a player and leader.
“I’m sure Shreyas Iyer will make all of us proud,” the franchise co-owner tells Cricbuzz in an interview, reflecting on the qualities of India’s new T20I captain and on a season in which Punjab Kings’ campaign dramatically declined after looking virtually unstoppable.”
“I think it’s the first time. I’m so proud of him and it’s very well deserved. I’m just so happy for his family – his mother, father, sister and all those people who have supported him through the years. I’ve only had the privilege of knowing him for a year and a half, and I’m so happy that I met him. He’s a wonderful person.”

Ness Wadia also felt happy for Shreyas Iyer’s family as he congratulated the latter’s parents and believes that the star batter will lead the national side with honour and dignity.
“This moment is especially important for the people who have been around him for so many years. I’m so happy for them, and congratulations to them as well. I’m sure that Shreyas will lead India with distinction. There’s no bigger honour than leading your country, right? I’m sure he’ll make India very proud, and make all of us proud as well.”
You’re going to be India captain one day- Ness Wadia
Ness Wadia also recalled the first moment when he met Shreyas Iyer in Dharamsala back in 2025 and spoke with him. The co-owner also revealed that he was the one who believed and told Shreyas that he would become the captain of India.
“Our first meeting was a brief one, at my house for about an hour before the Dharamsala camp last year, ahead of IPL 2025. I’d spoken to him a few times on the phone and things like that, but I’d never actually met him in person.”
“Within 15 minutes I turned around to him and said, ‘You know, you’re going to be India captain one day.’ And I said, ‘When you become captain, remember who told you.’ He looked at me a little surprised and smiled. He said, ‘No, no, no.’
