Broncos sign head coach Payton to new contract until 2031

The Denver Broncos have signed head coach Sean Payton to a new contract that will keep him with the team until 2031.

Payton took over in 2023 after Denver sent a first-round pick to his previous team, the New Orleans Saints, to acquire his services.

After a 8-9 finish in his first season, Payton has led the Broncos to two successive playoff berths.

The Broncos finished 14-3 last season, earning the number one seed in the AFC. However, they lost the AFC Championship Game to the New England Patriots.

“Sean Payton has led an impressive turnaround over the past three seasons, instilling a winning culture with high expectations,” Broncos owner and CEO Greg Penner said.

“I appreciate the close partnership he shares with George Paton along with the alignment and stability across our football operations.

“We’re thrilled for Sean to continue leading our team as head coach, building on our progress during such an exciting time for the Broncos.”

Payton previously spent 15 years with the New Orleans Saints, leading them to a Super Bowl title for the first time in the 2009 season.

The 62-year-old has an overall record of 194-188 including postseason games. He has the 12th-most wins in NFL history and ranks second among active head coaches behind Andy Reid (307).
